ROUGHING FILTERS

We have two trickling filters, installed in 1950, used as roughing filters to partially reduce carbonaceous biological oxygen demand (CBOD). The trickling filters had concrete roofs installed in 1977 to retain heat and air treatment was added to reduce the emission of odors. Wastewater is sprayed over a bed of rocks about six foot deep. The wastewater trickles down over the rock media. Biological growth feeds on the organic material in the wastewater converting it to carbon dioxide and water.
